Ba Xuan Hoang, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC). His interdisciplinary research encompasses clinical pharmacology, immunology, tissue engineering, oncology, and pain management. His work particularly focuses on advancing cancer treatment and drug development, with a strong emphasis on the use of natural compounds, micronutrients, and drug repurposing strategies. Beyond oncology, he has actively contributed to developing innovative, safe, and cost-effective therapeutic approaches for various immunopathologic and chronic degenerative diseases. These include immune thrombocytopenia, chronic kidney disease and kidney failure, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary fibrosis. His current research is centered on exploring metabolic therapies for cancer, chronic pain, cachexia, and end-stage renal disease, aiming to improve patient outcomes through novel, evidence-based interventions.
Letter from the Oncologist to Dr. Ba Xuan Hoang
On the occasion of November 20, 2025 – Vietnamese Teachers’ Day
In Vietnam, today is an opportunity for students to express gratitude to those who have passed on their profession and strengthened the resolve of the next generation on the journey of healing and saving lives. I am in Hanoi, and you are on the other side of the world, yet your guidance has never felt distant.
Since 2006, you have taught me through your simplicity and your integrity in medical practice: patience, certainty, and consistently placing the patient at the center. Although you are in the United States, thanks to the years you mentored me, your knowledge, mindset, and approach continue to accompany me every day. Whenever I face a case of advanced cancer, severe thrombocytopenic bleeding, or a chronic illness that seems hopeless, I remember what you taught me.
There have been many complex cases that have recovered over the past decade, which, without your behind-the-scenes guidance, I surely would not have been able to continue. Your insights from afar have opened doors for patients who had reached dead ends. Both the patients, their families, and I always carry this deeply in our hearts.
The most precious thing you have given me is not only knowledge, but a way of thinking, a way of understanding, and the belief that as long as even the slightest chance remains, a physician must try to the very end. This becomes even more meaningful when you look at your family’s lineage—steadfastly upholding the profession and extending it through your global reach. Continuing that deep-rooted tradition, you preserve the craft and tirelessly devote yourself to helping others.
On this November 20th, I respectfully wish you and your family good health and peace.
Respectfully,
Your student, Phạm Đình Tuần
Dr. Bo Han, PhD, serves as an Associate Professor at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, where she leads the Tissue Engineering and Drug Development Laboratory. With a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from USC and a Certified Nutrition Specialist from the American College of Nutrition, Dr. Han’s interdisciplinary expertise drives her research endeavors.
Her primary focus lies in elucidating the intricate influence of microenvironmental regulations on tissue repair, regeneration, and cancer progression. Dr. Han pioneers the development of diverse 3D models tailored to specific tissues, fostering realistic interactions between cells and the extracellular matrix.
Dr. Han actively explores the mechanisms of natural medicine and nutrient involvement in cellular metabolism. Her work extends to age-related and metabolic diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and more, aiming to unravel therapeutic avenues at the interface of nutrition and health.
Graeme Shaw, MD trained in Internal Medicine at Creighton University in Omaha and St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. For the past twenty-five years, his private practice has been devoted to the treatment of chronic illness with nutritional, natural and herbal therapies. He specializes in biotoxic illnesses, autoimmune disease, cancer and other chronic conditions. He has been a co-aurthor with Dr. Ba Hoang on multiple publications on cancer, asthma and other acute and chronic disorders. He is a member of The American College for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM) and the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS).
