Letter from the Oncologist to Dr. Ba Xuan Hoang

On the occasion of November 20, 2025 – Vietnamese Teachers’ Day

In Vietnam, today is an opportunity for students to express gratitude to those who have passed on their profession and strengthened the resolve of the next generation on the journey of healing and saving lives. I am in Hanoi, and you are on the other side of the world, yet your guidance has never felt distant.

Since 2006, you have taught me through your simplicity and your integrity in medical practice: patience, certainty, and consistently placing the patient at the center. Although you are in the United States, thanks to the years you mentored me, your knowledge, mindset, and approach continue to accompany me every day. Whenever I face a case of advanced cancer, severe thrombocytopenic bleeding, or a chronic illness that seems hopeless, I remember what you taught me.

There have been many complex cases that have recovered over the past decade, which, without your behind-the-scenes guidance, I surely would not have been able to continue. Your insights from afar have opened doors for patients who had reached dead ends. Both the patients, their families, and I always carry this deeply in our hearts.

The most precious thing you have given me is not only knowledge, but a way of thinking, a way of understanding, and the belief that as long as even the slightest chance remains, a physician must try to the very end. This becomes even more meaningful when you look at your family’s lineage—steadfastly upholding the profession and extending it through your global reach. Continuing that deep-rooted tradition, you preserve the craft and tirelessly devote yourself to helping others.

On this November 20th, I respectfully wish you and your family good health and peace.

Respectfully,
Your student, Phạm Đình Tuần
